Street Hawkers at Taman Gaya

New shops and newly assembled street hawkers in Taman Gaya

It has been a couple of years since I came here - Taman Gaya - and look at these new buildings AND food tucks!

Mama D was driving while I was busy catching up my Thai horror film in car. I didn't notice my surrounding. When she told me we are going to Taman Gaya for a quick dinner, I was expecting the same old, dingy shop lots area. Imagine my surprise when the car was parked. I un-buried my head when we parked. Imagine my eye-pleasing surprise.

The first sentence I uttered was, "Where are we?", while Mama D scurried over to take a seat. Someone's famished. She's here for the satay/sate (ref. link).

The satay (mutton and chicken mix platter) was pretty all right. The peanut gravy accompaniment is decent, too. It took me quite a while to decide what to order next for my main course, namely, carbo-filling dish. After all, I only had 5 chicken meat sticks for this course.

"Singapore" Hokkien Noodle, with FRIED PORK LARD BITS!

Finally decided on the above dish. After finishing the bits of squids and prawns, I was pretty done with the noodle intakes. Luckily, noodle given was in small portion. I didn't waste much. Rather wasting actual food than taking in (amount) what my body will not be needed to burn/use. That is also another form of wasting food.

Choices found here are super starch, fried and/or by-products usages. I said to Mama D, "No wonder people are getting lumpier these days from eating out. Not only of the crap choices like these common, to my horror, less people are cooking at home in this era. AND they eat bigger or same portion of food nutrient groups WITHOUT the same body output of an active person." If you have to eat out, often, make sure you earn loads for your medical fees or good food. After all, isn't it a common excuse to hear people are not cooking at home because they are busy working (earning)?

Mama D ordered kway tiao kiah.

When the dish arrived, Mama D said, "+Kenneth Loke won't be able to eat these there hor?". In a tone which sympathies my hubby for missing out this pig's spare parts. Needless. I've replied, to her surprise, Kenneth doesn't eats those, as she proceeded to named out one by one of the parts to confirm. Uh-huh, all those on Mama D's plate. Except that bowl of guo tiao, his favourite type of Chinese noodle. Teehee.

Shortly I'm done with the food on my table, I spent another good 10 minutes, scanning back and forth with the food choices I want to order next. NIL. Majority is carbo super starch dishes, minimal on meat or seafood protein and worse, deep fried by-products like sausages and nuggets from freezer. Even the fish slices porridge is deep fried with a thick batter of starch - few pieces of measly sliced fish and a mountain of congee. Sigh.

I stood up and took a walk around the still operating shops nearby. Mama D eats pretty slow. Slower than your average friend. So, it is not uncommon for me to take a stroll after meal while waiting for her.

I walked into a 24hrs mini mart. No vitamin bottled water. No decent choice of canned coffee either. I dislike Nescafé. It tastes like burnt tyres. Local produces? Hmm... they don't carry my usual favourite - beh tei soh. I left the mart with a small bag of sugar and chocolate coated peanuts. Sigh.
