It has been a while since any Hong Kong/China movie caught my interest. I am pleasantly surprised to find The Great Magician ~lucky-su! ~ at my first (successful) attempt!
Starring two of my favourite Hong Kong actors, Tony Leung and Sean Lau. Can't go wrong, and I was right.
There is nothing cheesy nor wannabe about this movie. Despite the seemingly villain captured lady then hero came rescuing's plot, it spun out to many more twists on the obvious, making it a whole lot more interesting than being just that.
It has humour, it is light-hearted, it has genuine kindness to remind us that we shouldn't just a book by its rumour/cover, it has magic, it has political conflicts and most pleasant of all, it has warmth.
